Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Community Neurodevelopmental Paediatrician to join our friendly, supportive and enthusiastic team within East Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The post represents an exciting opportunity to work collaboratively within a large, expanding multidisciplinary Community Neurodevelopmental Paediatric dedicated service.

The post will be office based in Burnley General Hospital working in hospital and community-based outpatient settings across the trust footprint. Flexible working from home arrangements are possible for non-patient facing work activities. There is no Acute Paediatric on call commitment associated with this post.

The Child Health Service in East Lancashire is the largest centralised children’s service in the North West and one of the largest in the country, serving a diverse population of around 520,000 people. Within the Family Care Division there are also General / Acute Paediatric, Neonatology and Child Psychiatry services. There are also many sub-specialty services. The Child Health Services are active in undergraduate and postgraduate specialist training.

Applicants must have full registration with the GMC with ability to demonstrate meeting L3 competencies for Community Child Health. Satisfactory completion of previous posts providing professional training in General Paediatrics, Community Paediatrics and Neonatology as recognised by the RCPCH is essential.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Primary medical qualification e.g. MBChB
  • MBChB Full registration with General Medical Council
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register for Community Child Health or Paediatric Neurodisability or due admission to Register within 6 months
  • If Specialist Registration (CCT) is in General Paediatrics then must be able to demonstrate they fulfil competencies for L3 Community Child Health / Paediatric Neurodisability
  • MRCPCH or MRCP (Paediatrics) or equivalent
  • A higher qualification e.g. M.D. or MSc.

Training

  • Experience and training in Child Protection to level appropriate for Consultant practice
  • Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses
  • Experience in other areas relevant to child health, eg: general practice, child mental health, obstetrics or public health
  • Specialist experience in one or more areas of practice to take a lead role in that area

Experience

  • Management of wide range of community paediatrics / paediatric neurodisability including child protection
  • At least 6 months NHS experience
  • Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and commitment to these within the Trust
  • Understanding of and experience performing audit / QI during general professional and higher specialist training
  • Awareness of basic research methods
  • Familiarity with evidence based practice
  • Experience in Medical Leadership role
  • Attendance at courses in teaching, appraisal and mentorship
  • Previous research projects/publications

Continuing Professional Development

  • Clear commitment to lifelong learning
  • Experience of evidence based medicine
  • Ability to keep up to date in the speciality
  • Membership of appropriate post graduate societies

Management

  • Understanding of current NHS management systems including clinical governance and risk management.
  • Attendance at management meetings e.g. Directorate Speciality Board Meetings
  • Attendance at appropriate management courses.
  • Previous participation in a management role
  • Experience in appraisal & mentoring

Personal Skills

  • Ability to communicate & liaise effectively with patients, their parents & other relatives & with colleagues/staff in all disciplines
  • Experience of supervision of junior staff
  • Ability to lead the development of services and provoke best practice amongst the colleagues
  • Ability to work in a team with professional colleagues both medical and from other disciplines
  • Attendance at e.g. Death/Bereavement or Breaking News workshops and Counselling courses
  • Evidence of development of leadership within the work environment
